What is AMPS?

AMPS stands for Automotive Maintenance & Physical-AI Services. It exists predominantly to move automotive repair, maintenance and service towards robotics and physical AI. AMPS captures the data that requires during real repair, maintenance and service work in workshops in the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Germany, anonymises it, and structures it so physical-AI models can learn repair tasks.

Is AMPS a staffing or labour-supply company?

No. AMPS runs repair-data programmes for physical AI, sold only as a project or service with a defined scope, deliverables, duration and an AMPS programme lead. You agree what the programme will deliver, chiefly a captured, anonymised and structured repair dataset, not a number of people or hours. The technicians who carry out the work are AMPS employees delivering the programme. The repair work they do is how the data is captured; it is not a product sold on its own.

What does a programme deliver?

A captured, anonymised and structured repair dataset; regular reporting on data captured and work done; and insight into repair times per step. Because the data is captured during real work, the repair, maintenance and service jobs in the agreed repair areas are completed as part of the programme. The AMPS Repair Library is available as an optional add-on, priced separately. The exact deliverables are set out in your programme proposal and agreement.

What does my workshop gain in the short, mid and long term?

In the short term, the work captured in the programme is completed in your bays as a by-product of capture. In the mid term, the data captured at your site can become training material for your own staff through the optional AMPS Repair Library, along with insight into actual repair times per step compared with OEM catalogue times. In the long term, your captured workflows put you in a good position when robot-assisted repair reaches the workshop. Throughout, the programme builds the dataset physical AI will learn repair from.

What is the AMPS Repair Library?

An optional service on top of a programme. The anonymised repair captures from your own location are catalogued and combined with OEM catalogue repair times and OEM-prescribed maintenance schedules. The result is step-by-step training material on the vehicles you service, with your own tools and bay layout, kept up to date as new repairs are captured. It helps less-experienced staff carry out defined jobs with guidance and shortens the learning curve for new staff. It is priced separately, on request.

How is the Repair Library different from training videos on the market?

Off-the-shelf training videos exist, but they are generic: filmed elsewhere, on other vehicles, with other tools. The Repair Library is built from real repairs in your own workshop, on the vehicles you actually service, and it grows as new repairs are captured. It also reflects your own bay layout and way of working, so the method your staff learn is the one used on your floor.

What is physical AI?

Physical AI is AI that perceives, decides and acts in the physical world through robots: robot arms, mobile robots, humanoids and other machines with sensors. Where a chatbot works with text, physical AI has to handle real objects, tools and spaces, which is why it learns from real-world data of people and machines at work.

Why does physical AI need real repair data?

Robots can only learn skilled manual work from real data of skilled people doing it. Repair, maintenance and service depend on hand-eye coordination, the right tool at the right moment, checks and decisions that vary from vehicle to vehicle. Very little of that is recorded in workshops today. AMPS captures it during real work: hand-eye coordinated movements, repair times, key repair moments and decision paths.

Why does AMPS focus on robotics and physical AI?

Our premise is that automotive repair, maintenance and service will move towards robotics: robot-assisted at first and, over time, more autonomous. That move depends on data, and the data has to come from skilled people doing real repairs. Repair work is the means; robotics and physical AI are the goal.

How does a repair become training data?

Four steps, in order: capture during the repair; anonymisation; structuring, where footage and logs are segmented into steps, labelled and aligned with timings; and preparation so physical-AI and LLM-based models can learn repair tasks.

Why real workshop data and not simulation?

Accepted Answer

Real repairs involve variation in vehicles, condition, tools and decisions that is hard to reproduce artificially. Capturing skilled technicians at work in real workshops records that variation as it happens. Recent research also points to robots that keep learning from real-world experience after deployment, which again depends on real data.

Is anyone else training robots this way?

Yes. Manufacturers and research teams are recording skilled human work to teach machines, including in Germany, and physical AI is spreading to every field where hand-eye coordination, perception and judgement matter, from factories to emergency response. A selection of independent reports is linked alongside these answers. Automotive repair is next, and AMPS captures the data it needs.

What happens for my workshop when robotisation arrives?

Robot-assisted repair is expected to start with mundane, repetitive activities, such as wheel and tyre handling, routine service steps and fluid checks, rather than complex repairs. Workshops that have run an AMPS programme are well placed to adopt it early: their workflows are already captured, so automation can be fitted to how they actually work. Nobody can say exactly when this will happen. When it does, workshops that have worked with AMPS are first in line to explore it with us.

Will robots replace technicians?

We believe automation should be introduced responsibly and step by step, with robots assisting skilled people and safety and repair quality kept first. Our programmes are built on skilled technicians, and the data they capture is what makes useful robot assistance possible.

How do OEMs and importers work with AMPS?

Accepted Answer

AMPS works with the manufacturer or importer to define one programme: brands, repair areas, capture scope, data use and deliverables. The OEM then offers that programme into its dealer network, so repair, maintenance and service data is captured the same way across many dealer workshops and aligned with the OEM’s catalogue repair times and maintenance schedules.

How does a programme reach our dealer network?

The OEM or importer introduces the programme to its dealers. Each dealer that takes part agrees the capture scope and data terms for its own site in writing, and an AMPS programme lead coordinates the start site by site. Every site runs the same method, so the data from one dealer can be compared with the next.

Can a dealer group start a programme on its own?

Yes. A programme can be scoped for a dealer group’s own sites. Where the group’s brands are part of an OEM programme, we align the capture scope and method with it.

Which other workshops take part?

Besides OEM dealer networks and dealer groups, programmes are open to independent workshop chains, tyre, fast-fit and smart repair businesses, and truck, bus and heavy-vehicle workshops.

What exactly is captured during a repair?

Hand-eye coordinated movements, repair times, decision paths and the key moments of each job, such as the tools used, decisions made and checks performed. What is captured at your site is defined in the capture scope of your agreement.

Which equipment is used?

AMPS technicians work with tablets, smart glasses (for example Meta glasses) and video. The glasses record a first-person view of the repair; the tablet is used to log times and tag key moments. AMPS provides the equipment.

Is the data anonymised, and when?

Yes, before it is processed. Identifying details are removed first, including people, number plates and customer information. Only then is the data structured.

Will we know what is being recorded?

Yes. You are told clearly and upfront what is recorded, where and why. The capture scope and the use of the anonymised data are written into every client agreement before work starts.

Can we exclude certain bays, jobs or vehicles from capture?

The capture scope is agreed with you during scoping and defines what is recorded, where and on which work. Any exclusions you need are part of that conversation and are written into your agreement.

Transparency is a core principle of the programme. As part of the start-up your floor team is briefed on what is captured. How information to staff and customers is handled at your site is agreed with you and set out in the programme agreement.
